Fairfield & Monmouth Earn Wins in Second Round of 2017 MAAC Softball Championship

No. 6 Fairfield University defeated No. 2 Siena College, 3-0, in the second round of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship. The Stags play No. 5 Monmouth University, in the winners bracket tomorrow, May 12 at 11:00 a.m. on ESPN3.

Junior Destinee Pallotto tossed a complete game shutout to earn her 12th win of the season. Pallotto went the distant, allowed three hits, struck out seven, and walked two. She retired 12 consecutive Saints to finish the game. Pallotto notched her 16th complete game (tied for MAAC lead) and fourth shutout of the year. All three hits that Pallotto surrendered were singles.  

Junior outfielder Angelina McGuire hit a one-out triple to rightfield in the top of the fifth inning, freshman outfielder Amanda Ulzheimer followed with an RBI single to left, to put the Stags up, 1-0. Senior utility Gianna Kinofer slugged a two-out, two-run single to right-center, which gave Fairfield a 3-0 lead. The Stags recorded three of their six hits in the top of the fifth inning.

The 2017 All-MAAC Second and Rookie Team selection, Ulzheimer went 2-3 on the day with an RBI, a run scored, and was hit by a pitch. Fairfield was 2-10 with runners in scoring position, while Siena went 0-4.

2017 All-MAAC Second Team selection, junior Lauren Butts took the loss in the complete game effort. She allowed three runs, earned, on six hits. The junior struck out four and walked five on the day and now has a record of (10-13). Butts tossed her team-leading 12th complete of the season.

2017 MAAC Player of the Year, sophomore Madysen Cossack went 0-2 at the dish with a walk and a strikeout. As a team, the Saints went 3-24 on the day at the plate, 0-8 with runners on base, and 0-7 with two outs.

Siena faces No. 4 Manhattan College in their second game of the day at 2:35 p.m. in the second round of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship on ESPN3.

No. 5 Monmouth University defeated No. 1 Iona College, 2-1, in nine innings in the second round of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship. The Hawks play No. 6 Fairfield University, in the winners bracket tomorrow, May 12 at 11:00 a.m. on ESPN3.

Monmouth's sophomore outfielder Jasmine Higa hit a game-winning two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning. The homer was Higa's second of her career. The sophomore launched an (0-1) offering from Iona's Alana Evans over the left-centerfield wall.

All-MAAC First Team selection, junior Amanda Riley tossed her second complete game of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship, her 17th of the year (leads the MAAC). Riley went the distance, allowed one run, earned, on three hits. She struck out a game-high 11 and walked seven. The win improved the junior's record to (16-16) on the season. Riley recorded four strikeouts over the last 2.0 innings of play.

Hawks' senior infielder Rachel Shotzbarger drove in the game's first run with an RBI single in the top of the second inning. She went 1-3 on the afternoon with one RBI, one strikeout, and one walk.

2017 MAAC Pitcher of the Year and All-MAAC First Team member, sophomore Alana Evans went the distance for the Gaels. She tossed 9.0 innings, allowed two runs, earned, on three hits. The sophomore struck out eight and walked seven. Evans took the loss, her record stands at (16-6) on the season. The complete game effort marked her 15th of the season.

2017 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-MAAC Second Team selection, Tori Danner drove in the Gaels lone run, on a single to rightfield in the bottom of the third inning.

Iona plays No. 3 Marist College today at 4:30 p.m. in the second round of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship on ESPN3.

The 2017 MAAC Softball Championship is a double elimination style tournament with the Championship final taking place on Saturday, May 13 at noon. If the team coming out of the loser's bracket defeats the team in the winners' bracket, the second and deciding game takes place at 2:30 p.m.

The winner of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Softball Selection Show is on Sunday, May 14 on ESPN2 at 10:00 p.m.
