No. 6 Fairfield University defeated No. 5 Monmouth University, 4-0, to advance to the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship round. The Stags advance to the Championship round for the first time since 2015, when they claimed the MAAC Softball Championship. Fairfield plays the winner of today's matchup between No. 5 Monmouth and either No. 3 Marist College or No. 4 Manhattan College.
The 2017 MAAC Softball Championship is a double elimination style tournament with the Championship final taking place on Saturday, May 13 at noon on ESPN3. If the team coming out of the loser's bracket defeats the team in the winners' bracket, the second and deciding game takes place at 2:30 p.m.
The Stags are the first No. 6 seed to reach the MAAC Championship round since Manhattan did so in 2014. The No. 6 seed has never won a MAAC Softball Championship since the league went to the six-team Championship format in 2014.
Stags' junior Destinee Pallotto tossed her second consecutive complete game shutout. Today Pallotto pitched a two-hitter en route to her 17th complete game of the season. She retired 17 batters in a row and 19-of-the-last-20 to pick up her 12th victory of the year.
Over the course of the MAAC Softball Championship Pallotto has compiled a (3-0) record with a 1.05 ERA (three earned runs/20.0 innings pitched) and has struck out 15 batters.
The Stags tallied three runs in the first inning off Hawks' starter Amanda Riley. Senior catcher Tori Reed drove in the game's first runs with a two-run triple to rightfield. Junior infielder Kristen Ball followed with a single that scored Reed to make it 3-0. The Stags tacked on a run in the top of the seventh on an infield single by freshman outfielder Amanda Ulzheimer.
With the loss, Monmouth plays in the losers bracket today at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN3. The Hawks face the winner of No. 3 Marist and No. 4 Manhattan. Riley went the distance, her third consecutive complete game for the Hawks and 18th of the season, which leads the MAAC. The junior went the distance, allowed four runs, earned, on six hits. She struck out five and walked three.
Senior infielder Justene Reyes went (2-3) with two singles for the Hawks. Reyes accounted for both of the team's hits against Pallotto. The rest of the Monmouth lineup went 0-20 against the Stags' junior starter.
The winner of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Softball Selection Show is on Sunday, May 14 on ESPN2 at 10:00 p.m.
