Iona Falls to UNC Wilmington in National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC)

Iona College (27-24, 15-5 MAAC) were defeated by UNC Wilmington (35-19-1, 10-9 CAA), 6-2, on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Gaels have been eliminated from the 2017 National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC).

Iona finished the inaugural NISC (1-2), with its lone win coming against Campbell University, 3-2, on Tuesday, May 16. The victory over the Camels marked the Gaels' first-ever national postseason win in program history.

2017 MAAC Pitcher of the Year, sophomore Alana Evans got the start for Iona in its third game of the tournament. Evans (17-7) took the loss. She went 3.1 innings, allowed six runs, earned, on seven hits. The sophomore struck out two and walked two. Freshman Marine Skinner pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. The freshman allowed four hits, struck out three and did not surrender a walk.

Junior catcher Tori Danner drove in the Gaels' first run of the day with a sacrifice fly to leftfield that scored senior outfielder Kelsey Long in the bottom of the third inning. Senior infielder Katie Newton knocked in Iona's second and final run of the contest with a single to rightfield that scored senior infielder Kristen Turner in the bottom of the seventh.

The Gaels hit .211 (4-19) with runners on base, .100 (1-10) with runners in scoring position, and were hitless with two outs (0-7). Turner went 1-3 with a triple and a run scored. Newton was 1-4 with a RBI single. Iona did not hit a home run for its seventh-straight game.

UNCW were fueled by a five run, seven hit top of the fifth inning. The Seahawks tallied 11 hits in the game, they hit .600 (6-10) with runners in scoring position, .571 (8-14) with runners on base, and .364 (4-11) with two outs.

Regional hosts are Pacific, Weber State, Illinois State, Lamar, Georgia State, and Liberty. Each double-elimination regional concludes play Thursday, May 18; the six-team Championship Round, also double elimination, will run May 21-24 at a host site to be determined.

The 15 Automatic Qualifiers are the teams with the best regular-season record in their respective conferences that are not playing in the 64-team NCAA Tournament. Six of these teams finished first in their conference for the regular season (Liberty, Iona, Illinois State, IUPUI, Ohio and Weber State). The seven National RPI selections all ranked in the top 100 nationally; at-large teams were selected off their body of work. 17 of the teams selected won 30 or more games this season.
