EDISON, NJ – Monmouth University claimed its third consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Overall Commissioner's Cup in 2016-17. The Hawks also secured the Men's Commissioner's Cup for the fourth year in a row, while Quinnipiac University won the Women's Commissioner's Cup for the first time in program history.

The MAAC Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in athletics in the 25 championship athletic events conducted within the MAAC. Each institution is scored in all championships that it fields a varsity team.  However, only the scores from the Men's and Women's Basketball participation, plus the other top six men's and other top six women's championships are used to determine an institution's total points.

During the 2016-17 campaign, Monmouth won the Field Hockey, Women's Indoor Track & Field, Men's Tennis, and Men's & Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

“Congratulations to Monmouth University, Athletic Director Marilyn McNeil, its student-athletes, coaches, and administrators in winning the 2016-17 MAAC Overall Commissioner's Cup and Men's Commissioner's Cup,” notes MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. “Monmouth has continued to excel and be competitive in many programs throughout its years in the MAAC, which is shown by winning its third consecutive Overall Commissioner's Cup and fourth straight Men's Cup.”

“We are so proud to accept the MAAC Commissioner's Cup for the third straight year,” said Monmouth Vice President and Director of Athletics, Dr. Marilyn McNeil.  “This is the result of the hard work and dedication of our students and their coaches and support staff. It takes a complete team effort to win the MAAC Commissioner's Cup and to win it three consecutive years is a remarkable achievement for our entire University.”

Quinnipiac takes home its first Women's Commissioner's Cup. This is Quinnipiac's first Commissioner's Cup victory (men, women, overall) since joining the MAAC in 2013. The Bobcats won the Women's Basketball, Women's Golf, and Women's Tennis Championships.

“Congratulations to Quinnipiac University, Athletic Director Greg Amodio, and its women's programs on winning its first MAAC Women's Commissioner's Cup,” noted Ensor. “Since joining the MAAC in 2013 Quinnipiac women's programs have been competitive. This academic year proved just how competitive they are by winning three women's MAAC Championships in Basketball, Golf, and Tennis.”

“We are thrilled to win the MAAC Women's Commissioner's Cup for the 2016-17 year,” said Quinnipiac Athletic Director Greg Amodio. “This honor is a reflection of the hard work and dedication by our coaches and student-athletes and the support that Quinnipiac Athletics receives from the Quinnipiac community. We hope that this is the first of many Commissioner's Cups as we continue to develop Quinnipiac's competitive position among the outstanding institutions that comprise the MAAC.”
