Iona's Kirui & Mostchmann Compete at 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

EUGENE, OR – Iona College junior Gilbert Kirui and junior Johannes Motschmann both competed at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, OR on Wednesday, June 7. Kirui placed sixth in the 10,000m final with a final time of 29:09.42 to earn All-American honors.
Kirui qualified for the 10,000m final with a seventh place finish in the NCAA East preliminary round at the University of Kentucky on May 25. With the sixth place finish (29:09.42) in the 10,000m final, the junior earned First Team All-American honors.
Tulsa senior Marc Scott claimed the 2017 NCAA Championship with a first place finish (29:01.54) in the 10,000m final. Kirui finished in front of seventh place finisher Northern Arizona senior Matthew Baxter (29:09.83). The junior notched his fastest time of the competition in the final lap (1:01.45).
Motschmann placed 19th overall in the 3,000m steeplechase semifinal with a final time of 9:01.28. The junior finished in 10th place in the second heat and recorded an average time of 1:10.85 per lap. Louisville senior Edwin Kibichiy finished in first place with a time of 8:41.07. The top 12 advanced to the 3,000m steeplechase final, which takes place on Friday, June 9 at 8:54 p.m. ET. The top seven qualifiers all participated in the second heat.
Gaels' senior Chartt Miller is set to participate in the 5,000m final on Friday, June 9 at 10:25 ET live on ESPN.
