2017 Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships Set to Tee Off on Friday, April 21

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLThe 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships are set to begin on Friday, April 21 in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The 18 teams will compete in the three-day event held at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course.

The men tee off from the front nine and the women will tee off from the back nine, starting at 7:30 a.m

The defending MAAC Men’s Champions Siena College is seeded first going into the opening round of play. Siena looks to win its fifth MAAC title. Fairfield University is the number two seed, followed by Manhattan College at the three seed. Saint Peter’s University will be the fourth seed, Monmouth University the fifth seed, and Iona College at the six spot. Seventh seeded is Rider University, followed by Canisius College, and rounding out the seeding this year on the men’s side is Niagara University at the nine spot.

The reigning women’s champion, Quinnipiac University, is seeded first and looks to win its second MAAC title. University at Albany is seeded second, Monmouth is in the three spot, Dayton University is fourth, and Siena  is seeded fifth. Hartford University is in the six spot, followed by Fairfield seeded seventh, Niagara eighth, and finishing off the women’s seeding is La Salle University.

The Saints received seven first place votes in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The team is led by senior Scott Kim, the September Golfer of the Month and Golfer of the week for March 29. Kim competed in 10 tournaments this season, averaging a score of 75.74. At the Connecticut Cup Tournament, Kim finished tied for fourth place shooting +3 overall and just two strokes behind the individual champion. At the Peacock Invitational held on April 11, Kim finished tied for fourth with six other opponents shooting a 73, just one over-par on the 18-hole tournament.

Fairfield is seeded second going into the MAAC Men’s Championship. Last year, the Stags finished in fifth place with a final tournament score of 908. The squad is paced by sophomore Kevin Duncan with a 76.52 average. Last week at the Yale Spring Invitational, Duncan scored a 151 (+11) to lead the Stags during the tournament. Duncan shot a team-best opening round of 73 (+3), finishing the tournament in 30th place out of a field of 71.

On the women’s side the defending champion, Quinnipiac received three first place votes in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll, after winning the 2016 MAAC Women’s championship. The Bobcats are paced by sophomore Luciana Tobia-Palza, the 2016 McLeod Trophy Winner. Tobia-Palza, a MAAC two-time Golfer of the Week recipient for the weeks of March 22 and April 19, posted a 79.40 average. Competing as an individual at the Hartford Invitational last week, Tobia-Palza shot a season-best first round 73 (+1), finishing the tournament in second place with a final score of 153.
The University at Albany finished tied for first in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll with five first place votes. The Great Danes are seeded second for the championship and recorded a first place finish in the fall against MAAC foe Siena. The team also finished tied for first last week at Hartford Hawks Women's Invitational. The squad is led by junior Annie Songeun Lee, who was named Golfer of the Month for September. Lee began the 2016-17 season with a second place finish out of a field of 68 at the Rutgers Women’s Golf Invitational, shooting rounds of 76, 75, and 75.

La Salle University Women’s Golf team is in its first season in program history and is attending its first MAAC Golf Championship.

At the close of each day of competition, the recap highlights will be posted to MAAC.TV and also be played on Disney’s in-room channel. This channel is available at various resorts on the Disney property.

The 2017 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship selection show will be televised on the Golf Channel, Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship selection show will also be televised the following week on the Golf Channel,  Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 12:00 p.m.
