Edison, NJ - Golfer of the month awards for the month of October were given to Justin Deitz and Catherine Shomo, both of Siena College.
Deitz played in just one event in October, but the junior made it count. He took first place in the Connecticut Cup on October 11th-12th by six strokes, and was the only golfer to finish the two-day event under par (his rounds of 72, 70, and 71 were good for a three-under-par score). His win was the first individual victory by a Saint men's golfer since Dan Abbondandolo won the rain-shortened Cornell Invitational in September of 2008.
Shomo tied for third at a rainy Rutgers Invitational on October 16th-17th. The wet and windy conditions made the course play very difficult on both days. However, the senior's two-round total of 160 spearheaded the Siena team, which finished third out of twenty teams at the event.
The 2011 Men's and Women's Golf Championships will be held April 29th-May 1st at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
