SECAUCUS, N.J. – Niagara outfielder Wynton Bernard was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the Major League Baseball’s (MLB) First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.

“This is such a blessing,” Bernard said. “My emotions are running high as I know everyone is so proud. With my Dad looking down from heaven and my family, friends, and coaches, it feels good to make them proud.”

Bernard was selected in the 35th round. The Poway, Calif. native is the first Purple Eagle to be drafted to the MLB since Jeff Vincent was selected by the Boston Red Sox in 2006.

“I am extremely happy for Wynton and his family,” Niagara head coach Rob McCoy said. “It has been a long, hard challenging road for him personally, and to be given an opportunity like this by his hometown team is priceless. I’d like to wish him and his family a huge congratulation from all of us here at Niagara University baseball. Wynton is a fantastic young man and I couldn’t be happier for him.”

Bernard played three seasons for the Purple Eagles, starting in 140 out of 142 games. He made an immediate impact as a freshman during the 2009 season. Bernard tied the program’s single-season record with five triples, led the team with 23 stolen bases, which are fifth most in school history, and had a career-high 28 RBIs.

After playing one season at Riverside Junior College in Riverside, Calif., Bernard returned to Monteagle Ridge for the 2011 season where he started in all 48 games while setting a then-career-best with 11 doubles.

Bernard had a breakout season campaign for the Purple Eagles in 2012. Bernard had career-highs in batting average (.314), runs (34), doubles (12), home runs (3) and slugging percentage (.459). He also a career-best, team and conference-leading 32 steals which are the second most in program history.

Bernard was recognized for his outstanding play by earning All-MAAC First Team honors and was named to the College Sports Madness All-MAAC First Team.

“Coach McCoy is the one who had the faith in me to come all the way from California,” Bernard said. “I can't thank him enough for the opportunity; he always believed in me. It is an amazing feeling to be living my dream and being able to play for my hometown team. Hardwork, dedication, prayers and belief is really what has allowed me to persevere.”

Bernard, who earned 2012 MAAC All-Academic Team honors, graduated with a degree in marketing in May.
