Release: 05/22/2013

TRENTON, NJ – Siena College’s senior slugger Mike Fish was the overwhelming choice as the 2013 MAAC Baseball Player of the Year, and leads this year’s All-MAAC Teams, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. The MAAC Baseball Awards were presented on the eve of the MAAC Baseball Championship Tournament, which will be held May 23-26, at ARM & HAMMER Park in Trenton, N.J.

The 6-1, 185-pound Fish enjoyed an outstanding season, finishing in the Top 3 in eight of the MAAC’s offensive categories. Fish, a four-year starter who entered the campaign with 10 career home runs, led the MAAC with 12 round-trippers in 2013. Fish also led the league in slugging percentage (.626), runs (54), hits (80) and total bases (134). He was second with 49 RBI and 16 doubles, and third with a .374 batting average. The senior from Delmar, N.Y., is the third Siena player to be named MAAC Player of the Year in the past four years. Dan Paolini won the award outright in 2010 and shared the award with Sean Jamieson of Canisius in 2011.

For the third time in four years a Rider hurler has been selected as MAAC Pitcher of the Year. Sophomore righthander Kurt Sowa posted an 11-1 record with a .917 winning percentage, tied for fifth nationally in the most recent NCAA statistics. His 11 victories led the MAAC and set a Rider record for most wins in a single season, and he was fourth in the league with a 2.97 ERA. Opposing batters hit just .176 against Sowa, who went 7-0 in MAAC games.  Sowa, who hails from Bensalem, PA., was recently named to the Division I All-State First Team by the New Jersey College Baseball Association.

The 2013 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year award is shared by Jon Fitzsimmons of Canisius and Kevin McCarthy of Marist. Fitzsimmons is a repeat Relief Pitcher of the Year award recipient after claiming the award last season. The 6-2, 210-pound junior righty from London, Ontario, was 3-0 with 10 saves in 19 appearances, including five saves in MAAC play. Fitzsimmons allowed just 11 hits in 27.1 innings pitched, recorded 33 strikeouts against just 15 walks, and opposing batters hit just .124 against him.  McCarthy, a 6-3, 200-pound junior from Malverne, N.Y., posted a 4-3 record with eight saves and a 3.60 ERA for the Red Foxes. In league play, McCarthy notched a MAAC-best seven saves and had a 2.06 ERA. It’s the first time the award has been shared since the Relief Pitcher of the Year was initially handed out in 2004.

Freshman lefthander Alex Godzak of Canisius was named MAAC Rookie of the Year after posting an 8-3 record with a 2.78 ERA, second best in the league. Opposing batters hit just .221 against the 5-9, 188-pound youngster from Syracuse, N.Y., also second best in the MAAC. Godzak was a three-time MAAC Rookie of the Week and recorded 62 strikeouts against just 23 walks, and allowed less than one hit per inning. Godzak is the Griffs’ fourth MAAC Rookie of the Year and second in as many years, as teammate Devon Stewart, also a pitcher, took the award in 2012.

Rider’s Barry Davis was voted Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year after leading the Broncs to a program best 34 regular season wins. Davis also guided Rider to its first ever outright MAAC regular season championship (the Broncs had won the MAAC’s Southern Division in 1998), and its 18 wins in conference play is also a Rider record. Davis, who is in his ninth year at Rider, surpassed the 800-victory mark for his career this season, and is now 817-382 in 24 years as a collegiate head coach. Previously, Davis had served as head coach of Georgia Southwestern State University for four years, and Gloucester County College for 11 years. Davis shared MAAC Coach of the Year honors in 2006 with Steve Owens of LeMoyne.

The All-MAAC First Team features Manhattan College's Ramon Ortega at catcher, Canisius College’s Jimmy Luppens at first base, Manhattan’s Nick Camastro at second base, Marist College’s Zach Shank at shortstop and Rider University’s Adam Wayman at third base.  The outfield features Fish of Siena College, Jesse Kelso of Canisius, and Ryan Plourde of Fairfield University. Rider's Jerry Mulderig is the designated hitter and Iona College's Matt Kriss fills the utility slot. Rider's Sowa is joined by Garrett Cortright of Canisius and Matt Gage of Siena as the All-MAAC First Team pitchers.

The All-MAAC Second Team includes Canisius’ Brooklyn Foster and Saint Peter’ University’s James Smith at catcher, Marist’s Mike Orefice and Niagara’s Ryan McCauley sharing first base, Matt Speckman of Saint Peter’s at second base, Nick McQuail of Marist at third base, and Canisius’ Ronnie Bernick at shortstop.
