EDISON, NJ – The 2013-14 All-MAAC Preseason Men’s Basketball Third Team, selected by the league’s 11 head coaches, includes four seniors and a pair of juniors.

Selected to the All-MAAC Preseason Third Team are Michael Alvarado and Emmy Andujar of Manhattan, Ike Azotam of Quinnipiac, Rob Poole of Siena, Chris Manhertz of Canisius and Maurice Barrow of Fairfield.

Alvarado, a 6-2, 180-pound senior from the Bronx, was Manhattan’s second leading scorer last year, averaging 8.4 points per game. He was a member of the MAAC’s All-Rookie team in 2010-11, and was a third team All-MAAC selection following his sophomore season. An early season ankle injury kept him out three games.  Alvarado scored in double figures in 13 of the 29 games he appeared in, and had a season high 19 points twice.

Quinnipiac’s Azotam enters his senior season, and his first in the MAAC, with career totals of 1,085 points and 716 rebounds. Last year, the rugged 6-7, 231-pound forward averaged 13.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game for the Bobcats, and earned second team All-Northeast Conference honors while registering 10 double-doubles.

Poole, one of the top three-point threats in the MAAC, was Siena’s second leading scorer (11.8 points per game) last year. The 6-5, 190-pound junior sank .399 of his attempts behind the arc, and averaged 2.0 three-point field goals made per game. Poole was also an ironman of sorts, averaging 35.1 minutes per game, fourth best among returning players this year.

Manhertz is the top returning rebounder in the MAAC, after averaging 8.7 caroms last season. His 297 rebounds rank as the seventh best single season mark in Canisius history. The 6-6, 235-pound senior from the Bronx, who will serve as Canisius’ captain for the third consecutive season, grabbed double figure rebounds in 13 games, including pulling down a career high 18 at Marist. Manhertz also contributed 7.6 points per game.

Fairfield’s Barrow earned recognition as the MAAC’s “Sixth Man of the Year” last season. The 6-5, 210 pound senior averaged 8.9 points and 4.0 rebounds off the bench for Fairfield, and returns as the Stags top scorer. He scored a career best 25 points, and added 10 rebounds, in a home win over Rider.

Andujar is a smooth 6-6, 205-pound junior forward from the Bronx who has led Manhattan in assists for two consecutive seasons. Andujar was the Jaspers third leading scorer (7.8 points) and second leading rebounder (5.0) last season. He was a MAAC All-Rookie selection two years ago.

The MAAC will announce the 2013-14 MAAC Men’s Basketball Preseason All-MAAC Second Team tomorrow.
