Fairfield & Monmouth Earn First Round Victories in 2017 MAAC Softball Championship

2017 MAAC Softball Championship First Round – Game One

No. 6 Fairfield University defeated No. 3 Marist College, 5-3, in the first round of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship. The Stags play No. 2 Siena College in the second round of the Championship tomorrow, May 11, at 9:00 a.m. on ESPN3.

Fairfield's senior catcher Tori Reed went 4-4 with a triple, home run, and three RBI. The senior launched her fifth homer of the year to right-centerfield to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Reed drove in the game's first two runs with a two-run single in the top of the first inning, which gave the Stags an early 2-0 lead.

With the game tied, 3-3, in the top of the sixth inning, Marist committed three errors, two of which occurred on one play which allowed Fairfield to score two runs. Stags pitching was able to hold onto the 5-3 lead to close out the first round win.

Stags' starting pitcher Destinee Pallotto tossed 6.0 innings, allowed three runs, earned, on nine hits. Pallotto struck out four and walked none to earn her 11th win of the season. Junior Kristen Ball closed out the game for the Stags with a scoreless seventh inning to record her second save of the season.

Red Foxes' senior outfielder Janna Korak and sophomore outfielder Casey Page combined to go 6-8 with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored. Korak doubled twice for the Red Foxes, her first scored Page, who led off the inning with a bunt single. Her second double of the day also scored Page in the bottom of the third inning.

Senior Jayne Oberdorf got the start for Marist, she tossed 4.0 innings, allowed two runs, earned, on five hits. She struck out five and walked two. Sophomore Megan Beiermeister tossed 3.0 innings of relief, allowed three runs, one earned, and took the loss. The sophomore struck out three and walked one.

Marist plays tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. in the second round of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship. The Red Foxes face the loser of No. 1 Iona College and No. 5 Monmouth University on ESPN3.

No. 5 Monmouth University earned its first victory of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship over No. 4 Manhattan College, 4-0. The Hawks take on No. 1 Iona College in the second round of action tomorrow, May 11, at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN3.

Monmouth's junior Amanda Riley tossed a complete shutout (7.0 innings), allowed two hits, and struck out six en route to victory. The outing marked her league-leading 16th complete game of the season, and her fourth shutout, which is tied for the fourth-most in the MAAC. Riley allowed both of her hits to Jaspers' freshman infielder Christine Gebhardt. The rest of the Manhattan lineup went (0-20) against the righty pitcher.

Senior infielder Justene Reyes went 3-3 with a home run, a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Reyes hit her seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

Junior catcher Alex Holzman and freshman infielder Kayla Rosado drove in a run a piece for the Hawks. Junior infielder Morgan Balderas went 2-4 and scored two runs on the day. As a team Monmouth hit .417 (5-12) with runners on base and .333 (3-9) with runners in scoring position.

Jaspers' starter, freshman Nicole Williams pitched 4.0 innings, allowed three runs, earned, on six hits. She struck out four and walked one.  

Manhattan plays tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the second round of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship. The Jaspers take on the loser of No. 2 Siena College and No. 6 Fairfield on ESPN3.  

The 2017 MAAC Softball Championship is a double elimination style tournament with the Championship final taking place on Saturday, May 13 at noon. If the team coming out of the loser's bracket defeats the team in the winners' bracket, the second and deciding game takes place at 2:30 p.m.

The winner of the 2017 MAAC Softball Championship earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Softball Selection Show is on Sunday, May 14 on ESPN2 at 10:00 p.m.
