Fairfield University Wins 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship

FAIRFIELD, CT – Fairfield University defeated Quinnipiac University, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-23) to win the 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship. The Stags have captured the MAAC Volleyball Championship for the second consecutive year and have taken home the title in four out of the last five years (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016).

Today’s victory marks Fairfield’s ninth MAAC Volleyball Championship in program history. The Stags extended their active winning streak to 22 matches, which is the longest streak in the nation.

Fairfield was led by the 2016 MAAC Player of the Year, Skyler Day and All-MAAC First Team representative, Megan Theiller. Day recorded 18 kills, six digs, two blocks, and hit .341 (18-for-41) en route to victory. The junior’s 18 kills were tied for the match-high. Theiller registered 18 kills of her own, seven digs, and hit .361 (18-for-36) on the day.

Stags’ senior middle blocker Megan O’Sullivan was named the 2016 Championship Most Outstanding Player. In the championship victory, O’Sullivan registered seven kills and three blocks for Fairfield. Sophomore libero Mallory Bechtold added a match-high 15 digs.

Quinnipiac’s senior middle hitter Allison Leigh finished the match with 10 kills, seven blocks, and hit .391 (10-for-23) this afternoon. Sophomore outside hitter Kat Miller tallied a team-high 11 kills, six digs, and six blocks. Freshman outside hitter Natalie Alechko recorded three kills and a team-high 11 digs.

The Stags hit .283 (50-for-113) this afternoon, while the Bobcats hit .167 (33-for-108) as a team.

The Fairfield University Stags will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. The NCAA Volleyball selection show airs on Sunday, November 27 at 9:00 p.m. on ESPNU.
