Monmouth University Wins 2016 MAAC Womenís Soccer Championship

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University has defeated Quinnipiac University, 5-2 to win the 2016 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship. The victory marks Monmouth’s second MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship in program history. The Hawks advance to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship for the fourth time in program history.

Sophomore forward Alli DeLuca put Monmouth in front, 1-0 in the 23rd minute of play when she found the back of the net on a strike from outside the box. Red-shirt senior forward Rachael Ivanicki extended the Hawks lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 32nd minute, she was assisted by DeLuca.

Miranda Konstantinides tallied the Hawks’ third goal of the game in the 43rd minute. The junior defender headed in a cross from freshman forward Anna Lazur, who received the initial pass from senior defender Julie Spracklin. Konstantinides recorded her second goal of the game in the 50th minute off a feed from junior forward Rachelle Ross and 2016 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year Alexis McTamney.

The 2016 MAAC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Year Madie Gibson notched the Hawks’ fifth goal when she scored in the 62nd minute of play. Gibson was assisted by McTamney, who earned her second helper of the day.

Quinnipiac got on the board in the 53rd minute when sophomore forward Nadya Gill drew a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Kelly Caruso took the penalty kick for the Bobcats and converted her first goal of the Championship.

Sophomore midfielder Jess Gargan tallied the Bobcats’ second goal of the game off a free kick from 40 yards out in the 85th minute.

Monmouth University will receive the leagues automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. The NCAA Selection Show for Division I Women’s Soccer will air on NCAA.com on Monday, November 7 at 4:30 p.m.
