No. 4 Iona Wins 2017 MAAC Water Polo Championship Consolation Game

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The No. 4 seeded Iona College Gaels have beaten the No. 3 seeded Virginia Military Institute Keydets, 11-10, in the 2017 MAAC Water polo Championship Consolation game. The Gaels have earned third place with the victory.
The Gaels and Keydets traded goals in the first quarter, with each team scoring three apiece in the opening minutes of the game. 2017 MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year Hanna Schultz (three goals, one assist) and Player of the Game Kayla Allen (four goals, two assists, six points) opened the scoring for the Gaels. VMI answered with goals from Emma Noble (one goal, three assist). After one quarter of play, the teams were tied, 4-4.
In the second quarter, Iona scored five unanswered goals from Schultz, Allen, Megan Hofer (one goal), and Regan Warmoth (one goal). Shelby Barkley scored for the Keydets with one second left in the half to cut Iona's lead to 9-5.
In the second half, the Keydets were able to outscore the Gaels, 5-2. VMI received goals from Barkley (three goals), Cecilya Lundy (three goals), and Natalie Rivas (two goals). The Gaels were able to maintain the lead with two second half goals from Devika Joshi (two goals).
