Edison, N.J. ? Rider University’s Jason Thompson was named winner of the 75th Haggerty Award as the 2007-08 All-Met Division I Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year, presented by the National Invitation Tournament and the Met Basketball Writers Association.

Thompson is the first player from Rider to win the Haggerty Award, and the second straight MAAC player of the year to do it, following Jared Jordan of Marist College.  He led the Broncs with 20.4 points per game (second in MAAC, 29th in the nation), 412 rebounds and 12.1 boards per game (first in the MAAC, second nationally), 91 blocks and 2.7 blocks per game (second in the MAAC, 18th nationally).  Thompson shot 56 percent from the field, and graduates as Rider’s all-time rebounding leader (1,171) and one of 96 Division I players to compile more than 2,000 points (2,040) and 1,000 rebounds in a career.

Rider’s Tommy Dempsey won the Peter A. Carlesimo Coach of the Year Award.  Dempsey guided the Broncs (23-11) to a share of the MAAC regular season title and the conference championship game.  Rider advanced to the postseason College Basketball Invitational, losing in the first round to Old Dominion University.
